The Norfolk village of Feltwell is situated some 10 miles west of Thetford and is thought to have the largest parish area in the county. In the early 19th century the village held a race meeting on Monday 21st January 1833 which was staged over 3 miles of open hunting ground containing several desperate leaps. The match was between Mr Flowers Pioneer, which he rode himself, while Mr Nurse entered both Predictor and Kitty Cleyeland which William Newcombe and Captain Newcombe rode. For the first two miles there was little to choose between the three, but then Predictor took up the running and looked to be justifying short odds of 5/2 laid on him. At the water jump he was joined by Kitty who then cut corners at two consecutive homeward leaps to forge a narrow lead. With 7 furlongs to go Kitty was a length in front of Pioneer and she maintained her length lead to the line. |
